Plate calculator

Works out how to load a target weight on the bar. If your plates cannot build the target exactly, it shows the nearest achievable weight and the difference instead of rounding silently.

How it is calculated

The arithmetic is simple: subtract the bar, halve what is left, then fill from the heaviest plate down. With standard plate sets this always finds the solution using the fewest plates.

When the target cannot be built exactly, the rounding is not hidden. Asking for 102.5 and loading 100 is one thing; believing you loaded 102.5 is another — the second corrupts your training log.

Bar weight and plate set are both selectable, because gyms differ: an Olympic bar is 20 kg, a women's bar 15 kg, technical bars lighter still. The wrong bar weight shifts the entire calculation.

This is an estimate, not a measurement. The equation is built on a population average; your own value can fall outside that range.

You have the number — now comes the decision

Comparing these numbers against weekly data and revising with a stated reason is the actual work. That is how online coaching runs here.
